Audemus jura nostra defendere. To those who live in Alabama, this phrase is a motto to live by. Meaning ‘We dare defend our rights’; this motto was brought to completion in 1923. It stands for the statewide sentiment during those tumultuous times.

The first settlement in this state was created by the French in 1702. This settlement was known as Mobile, and it still stands today. The French, British, and Spanish all had pieces of this state, and thus, its admission into the union had to be delayed until the Spanish side of the state was captured by Andrew Jackson in 1814. This allowed the state to join the United States in 1819, making it number twenty-two in the growing list of states.

The geography throughout this state is amazingly diverse. Near Mobile Bay, the elevation is just at sea level. In the Northeastern part of the state, however, the elevation spikes at nearly twenty-five hundred feet at Mount Cheaha. The Appalachian Mountains cover substantial parts of northern Alabama; therefore, most of this part of the state lies at consistent elevations above fifteen hundred feet.

The state of Alabama is well known for its high education goals. With over fourteen public universities, seventeen private universities, and numerous community colleges, the state’s residents enjoy access to hundreds of different degree programs including sixteen doctoral level programs. Nearly four billion dollars a year is appropriated for the public school systems that cover elementary and secondary educations. All told, Alabama has made significant improvement in the education that its students are getting since the ‘No child left behind’ law was signed into practice.
