Despite the confusion over the proper translation, the state of Colorado introduced the motto ‘Nil sine numine’ to the state seal in 1861. After some debate, the First Territorial Assembly collectively translated this phrase to mean ‘Nothing without the Deity’. Today, we know this to be thought of as ‘Nothing without God’s Will’.
Colorado is one of three states in the country that use lines of latitude and longitude to define the state borders. This is mostly because there is a distinct lack of natural borders for this and the other two states that define their borders in this manner.
The geological diversity in this state varies depending on where you are in Colorado. East of the Rockies, Colorado enjoys flat plains known as the Colorado Eastern Plains and the High Plains. These plains areas are not highly populated, and much of this land is used for farming and ranching purposes. On the other side of the state, the Rocky Mountains prevail. In fact, the highest point in the entire Rocky Mountain Range, Mount Elbert, is located within Colorado.
Colorado is well known for its extreme weather. Because of its location east of the Continental Divide, thunderstorms are often seen here. Lightning is a common occurrence, and the state holds the record for the most lightning related deaths in the United States. Most of the plains areas in the state see tornadoes quite often, but not as much as states further inside tornado alley. Floods and heat waves are also natural events that the state has to deal with on a consistent basis.
