All About FLORIDA!
The state motto for Florida is shared by the United States as well. In God we Trust is a controversial motto, but it continues to be seen on the state of Florida seal as well as on all American currency. The exact origin of the motto for the state is unknown.
Archeological evidence shows that civilization existed in Florida for many years before the Spanish made landfall here in 1513. Prior to his coming, the state was known as Tegesta, which was the name of a Native American tribe that inhabited the area. It is suggested that Ponce de Leon, the man who supposedly discovered Florida, was not the first European to settle here. According to some historical reports, at least one of the Native Americans in the area spoke Spanish fluently when the conquistador arrived.
Most of this state is located on a peninsula which separates the Gulf of Mexico from the Atlantic Ocean. Many underwater caves exist here, and it is not uncommon to find springs and sinkholes throughout the state. The south of the state is covered in a huge, slow moving river known as the Everglades. The state has a huge coastline that is comprised of ancient sands that were deposited throughout the centuries as the mean sea level rose and fell.
Natural disasters are something that Florida is used to. Hurricanes are a common occurrence and the amount of electrical thunderstorms in the state has earned it the nickname of the ‘Lighting Capital’ of the world. Tornadoes often accompany these storms or the hurricanes that are felt each year. The state rarely sees snow, but at least one blizzard has been recorded in the area. The state does not sit on any active tectonic boundaries, but earthquakes are not unheard of. The most recent quake occurred in 2006 when a 6.0 shock that originated in the Gulf of Mexico was felt throughout the state.
