Illinois is a state that is located in the Midwest of the United States. This state’s motto, ‘State sovereignty, National Union’, depicts the ideals of those who originally founded the state. Nearly 3/5ths of the entire population of the state reside in the northwest corner of the state, and Chicago holds the claim of the largest city in the Midwestern US.
The name of the state is said to be derived from one of the many Algonquin languages. It is translated to mean ‘he (or she) speaks normally’. Quite ironically, an Associated Press analysis found this state to be demographically average, or normal. The entire state lies in the Interior Plains of the United States, and though it is divided into three major parts, there is nothing uniquely defining about any of them.
Ethical diversity is one thing, however, that this state is well known for. The biggest influence on this factor is the city of Chicago, which is home to many different people from all walks of life. Throughout history, this state has been the center of immigration and emigration for those who were traveling across the country. Many cultures, including the Mormons, came to this state and left again. At one point, even freed black slaves were prohibited from settling here, and the Mormon leader was killed in an Illinois jail. Many Irish immigrants were known to settle in this area, and by these modern times, cultural, religious, and ethnical diversity has only expanded.
Illinois is famous for its energy. It was the first state to use artificial, self sustaining nuclear reactors to generate electricity. This occurred at the Chicago Pile-1. Since then, Illinois has become the leading state in regards to nuclear power generation with six plants that house a total of eleven nuclear reactors. Nearly half of the state’s power comes from this source.
