Evidence of the first inhabitants of Iowa dates back to some 13,000 years ago when Native Americans lived here during the glacial period. As populations grew, more and more of these people settled in one area and began to adjust to local ecosystems. Only three thousand years ago do we see the first use of domesticated plants.
Agriculture is the most important economical sector for this state. It is a huge producer of hogs, corn, oats, cattle, eggs, and dairy. Iowa is also the nation’s leading ethanol producer. Aside from agriculture, chemical production and the insurance industry are other important sectors for the economy in this state. Publishing and precious metals are also important to the state.
