This motto comes from the fact that this state used to be the only state in the country to hold its elections in September. This area also contains the biggest tidal whirlpool in the entire western hemisphere.

Maine was once part of another state, Massachusetts. Despite the fact that it was a part of this state, it was still physically separated and steadily growing. Because of these facts, Maine was granted the authority to form its own state and government. It was then allowed to join the Union in the year 1820 under the balancing legislature provided by the Missouri compromise.

Maine is famous for its lobsters, and while commercial fishing is no longer the mainstay of the economy, it is still very vital and important to the state. This state is also the largest producer of blueberries in the entire world. This area is also well known for its navy ship building and military air station in Brunswick. Tourism has become more and more important over the course of time, and today, many tourists come to Maine to hunt, hike, fish, and ski.
