All About OREGON!

The state motto for the state of Oregon means ‘she flies with her own wings’. Alis volat propriis is simple to understand when viewed in context. It comes from a time when the state of Oregon was not a part of Britain, yet it was not a part of the Union either. Instead, the state flew with her own wings and built her own government to lead her. While the state did originally join the union at a later date, the motto stayed with her as it was seen as reflective of the independent nature of the state itself.

Oregon is most famous for the trail that was named after it in the mid 1800’s. This trail, the Oregon Trail, was the path that many people took out west. The trail was defined as difficult to traverse, but led to the possibility of a grand new life for those who made it. Despite a dispute over the border, the territory of Oregon was finally set as ending at the 49th parallel.

The state of Oregon sits atop the Juan de Fuca plate. This tectonic system is responsible for the creation of the mountains in the area, and it continues to create change throughout the land. The area is continually at risk for volcanoes and earthquakes as this plate system shifts. Though the last major earthquake occurred in the 1700’s, the state is not without risk of a new major quake at any time.

Agriculture is an important part of the Oregon economy. The land in the area is very fertile and is well suited for growing things. This is due to the Missoula floods that brought rich soil to the valleys of Oregon. Today, this state grows potatoes, apples, hops, and peppermint. It is also one of the world’s largest producers of hazelnut.
