Rhode Island is not the entire name of the state. The full name is the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. While it is the smallest state in the Union, it has the longest name. The motto for this state, ‘Hope’, is also the shortest of all the state mottos. While the state is called an Island, it really is located on part of the North American mainland.
Rhode Island is a small state. It is the smallest state in the entire United States. It is almost totally flat, although there are a few hills and such. No point in the state goes over one thousand feet. Most of the state is close to water, and it is famous for its beautiful coastline. Many beaches as well as the rivers and sounds, make this state a very wet one.
One of the things that this state is most famous for is the type of iron rock that is found in the city of Cumberland. This rock, dubbed ‘Cumberlandite’, has only ever been found in two places. One of these deposits was nearly mined clean during the Civil War. Because this rock is a type of iron, it was used to make weapons for the war.
Before the depression, this state was one of the leaders in textiles. As these companies and factories moved south, new businesses took their place. Today, services are the largest part of the state’s economy. Many of the old factories have been converted into some sort of housing rather than using them for a factory or leaving them abandoned.
