The South Dakota motto reflects the ideals that the state was built on. As the state was colonized, the people believed that they were given a beautiful place to live and thrive directly from God himself. This idea is reflected in the motto, which reads ‘Under God the People Rule’. Simple, and to the point, the motto is now part of the great seal of South Dakota.
Much like its northern twin, South Dakota is considered part of the Great Plains as well as the Midwest. There is a lot of fertile land in this area, and many rivers and lakes lend to the agriculture that has become a very important part of the economy here. The state is not flat, however, and contains many rolling hills including the Black Hills.
Agriculture was always a big part of the economy of this state, but it was severely disrupted during the Dust bowl. This event, which occurred throughout the 1930’s, left thousands of acres unusable for farming. Caused by drought as well as inappropriate farming techniques, the dust storms that came took the topsoil used for farming and put it in the Atlantic Ocean.
Today, the service sector is the biggest part of the state’s economy. The paradigm has shifted from farming to retail, service, finance, and health care. Some things are still grown in this state, and it is one of the leading producers of ethanol in the country.
