Hawaii has a rich history. It was originally inhabited by natives that formed the Kingdom of Hawai’i. The state motto, ‘Ua mau ka ea o ka aina I ka pono’, is a phrase in this native language that means, ‘The life of the land is perpetuated by righteousness’. This motto was given to the state by King Kamehamemeha the third after he regained sovereignty from the British in 1843.

The state of Hawaii is the only state in the entire country that is not bordered by any other state or country. It is an archipelago that is located out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. It is also the only state in the country that has no straight line in its borders, and is always growing. The state is especially unique in that it still has a royal palace where as no other US state has one. Because the state was created by volcanoes, it is not hard to believe that these volcanoes still contribute to the growth of the state.

While the state was originally an internationally recognized independent country, the kingdom that ruled was overthrown. Because of this, the state was annexed by the United States in the 1900’s. It was late in becoming an actual state, and it did not do so until 1959. This was the last state to join the Union. It is thought that Hawaii inhabitants have lived in the area since times as early as the 4th century.

Hawaii is unique in so many ways, including demographics. As it is, this is one of only four states to have a majority population that is not non-Hispanic white. Almost twenty percent of the entire population is of mixed decent, and it has a very high concentration of Asian Americans as well. Overall, the population in this state is very diverse.
