What is a Moving Quote? Knowing the Differences can Save Money

The term moving quotes is not hard to understand. Most people know that when you ask for a moving quote, you will get price estimates from the companies that you contact. What most consumers don’t realize, however, is that there are many differences between quotes. There are warning flags that can be derived from some quotes, and other quotes can be as good as a legal document. Knowing the differences can really save you thousands of dollars when you are moving, so it is important to know more about moving quotes that the simple fact of them being price estimates.

Agents

The first thing that all consumers should know is that moving companies are permitted to have agents contact and communicate with its customers for them. At the same time, these moving companies are not legally bound to abide by the deals that the agent has made with the consumers. What does this mean for you and me? We always need to make sure that we are talking to an actual company representative before we agree on any deal. If we are not, then we need to contact the company and verify that they will honor the deals that the agent has set forth. This can save you time and money when you avoid the problems that can arise when a company will no honor the deal you thought you were getting.

Binding and Non Binding

The other major thing that most consumers do not know is the fact that there are two different types of moving quotes. These types are the binding and non binding types. Non binding quotes present the biggest danger to consumers. These quotes can be changed when the movers load all of your stuff into the truck, and you can be liable for thousands more than you bargained for. This is how many of the moving scams are perpetuated these days.
Binding quotes are much safer for today’s consumer. These estimates are made by company representatives after coming to your home to see what you will be moving. They set forth a price that cannot be exceeded unless you add services later on. This is the safest method to use because you will not be surprised by a much larger moving bill when everything arrives at your destination.

Red Flags

Simply knowing the differences between quotes, however, is not enough to save you from total disaster. There are a couple of things that you need to be aware of that should raise red flags. The biggest thing is a very low price quote. Remember, if it is too good to be true, then it probably is. Consumers also need to be aware of companies who either charge for quotes, or who will not give up company licensing information. Those who come across companies that do these things should avoid them at all costs. Taking this into account can help you have a successful and simple move. Remember, not all moving quotes are created equal.
